DID HE OR DIDN’T HE? DID WIARTON WILLIE SEE HIS SHADOW

DID HE OR DIDN’T HE? DID WIARTON WILLIE SEE HIS SHADOW … according to Mayor Janet Jackson, South Bruce Peninsula is home to Canada’s most famous weather prognosticating groundhog Wiarton Willie! Every year on February 2nd people from around the world eagerly await to see if Wiarton Willie will see his shadow indicating six more weeks of winter, or not see his shadow, predicting an early spring. Jackson adds the Wiarton Willie Festival celebrates its 65th anniversary today.

Although the event was virtual this year due to COVID-19, Willie did put in an appearance  and we are looking at … DRUM ROLL PLEASE … On this Groundhog Day, it’s a split decision.  Punxsutawney Phil down in Pennsylvania saw his shadow this morning, so it’s six more weeks of winter.  But Shubenacadie Sam in Nova Scotia, almost buried under a current snowstorm, didn’t see his…..so the forecast is for an early spring.

Ontario’s Wiarton Willie tips the balance in favour of an early arrival of spring…..he also didn’t see his shadow this morning.

Both Canadian groundhogs had their annual predictions broadcast on the web…….crowds were forbidden due to COVID-19 restrictions.
