By Rosalind Russell – Espanola’s municipal budget is showing a slight increase this year.
Espanola CAO, Cynthia Townsend, says the budget sits at just under a two-per-cent increase right now, but she expects that final amount to drop to less than one-per-cent by the time the document is finalized on May 14th.
Savings were found by not installing a new carpet in the library, a slight decrease in education taxes and some new grant money for infrastructure and service delivery.
There are three key capital projects planned for in the budget.
Townsend says the Canada Infrastructure Program funding of $5 million will be used to reconstruct Mead Boulevard from Queensway Avenue to Second Avenue with other financial supports used to offset the overall cost.
Townsend adds Connecting Link supports will be used to apply for reconstruction of Centre Street – Highway Six from Tudhope Street to Station Road.
The third project is insulating the ceiling in the complex with $50,000 from reserves to complete the work.
