Investigation continues into fire in Elliot Lake

The Elliot Lake Fire Department in partnership with the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office and OPP is continuing its investigation into a vacant school building fire.

Fire Chief John Thomas says last Friday at around 2 pm, his office received a call about the fire at a vacant building on Lisbon Road.

The building is the former Notre Dame du Bois Joli, which also served the community for a time as College Boreal.

He says crews were able to get the fire under control, but heavy damage was done to the building.

Thomas adds the estimated damage is unknown, and the fire is suspicious in nature.

East Algoma OPP Constable Phil Young reports that there were some individuals who were seen leaving the scene just before the fire broke out.

Any person with information regarding the fires should immediately contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 or their nearest police authority. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit information online.

You may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2000.
