Manitoulin Island political figure Austin Hunt has passed away

Long-time Manitoulin Island resident and former Billings Township Mayor Austin Hunt passed away Wednesday following a lengthy illness.

Hunt celebrated over a half-century of public service that included several years as Reeve and then Mayor of Billings Township.

In the 1960’s he worked as Lester Pearson’s regional campaign manager when the former Prime Minister ran in the local riding.

For much of his time in office, Hunt also represented the Manitoulin Municipal Association on the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities and sat upon the governing body of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.

He was also Ontario’s longest serving politician, 65 years in all as of his retirement in 2018. 

Funeral services are being finalized.

He was 95.
