Manitoulin Island’s Dr. Shirley Cheechoo to receive award

Women in Film and Television – Toronto has announced its 34th Annual Crystal Awards honourees with one of them hailing from Manitoulin Island.

Dr. Shirley Cheechoo, filmmaker, writer, actor and founder of the Weengushk Film Institute on the Island is to receive a Special Jury Award of Distinction.

Executive Director Karen Bruce says the awards will be held just in time for International Women’s Day next Spring.  

Cheechoo will be acknowledged for her talents and is best known for play Path With No Moccasins, as well as being the founder of De-Ba-Jeh-Mu-Jig theatre group on the Island, and acting on the television series Spirit Bay and The Rez.

She was also named chancellor of Brock University in July 2015, the institution’s first female and first aboriginal chancellor.

Bruce adds the annual celebration will return to an in-person event on Tuesday, March 8th at Toronto’s Arcadian Court.
