The Education Director of the Rainbow District School Board Bruce Bourget says acts of racism will not be tolerated in any schools under any circumstances.
The response comes after Bourget was made aware of an incident that’s alleged to have taken place October 22nd at Manitoulin Secondary School, where a group of male students marched through the halls while playing a Nazi anthem.
It was brought to the board’s attention through social media which was shared by a student who said there was an intervention, but wanted the public to be aware of the incident.
Bourget says after investigating this incident, what occurred was not based on hate, but a lack of understanding of anti-Semitism and the depth of the atrocities that were committed against Jewish people.
He says ignorance is never an excuse, and the actions were unacceptable. He says the board values safe and inclusive environments for all.
According to Bourget, the matter has been dealt with and included an educational component.
