The COVID REPORT – American border opens today

The lineups are expected to be long, as the United States opens its land border with Canada today to those who are fully-vaccinated.

The move comes three months after Canada opened its land crossings to Americans.

You won’t need proof of a negative COVID-19 test if you drive across but you will need one, done within 72 hours, to return home.

The tests cost between 150 and 300 dollars and testing facilities say they’re already booking up.

So if you’re planning to head to the U-S for just a short time, you may want to get your test done before you leave Canada.

Those flying into the U-S will be required to present a negative test result when they touch down.

Record numbers of cases in Ontario

Provincial health experts are expected to have more to say today, after our province recorded another increase in COVID-19 cases yesterday.

There were 636 new cases yesterday a big jump from the 508 reported on Saturday and the highest number in a month.

The positivity rate the percentage of tests coming back positive now just over two per cent, the greatest rate in five weeks.

Food prices jumping

We should expect to see high food prices in our stores through the winter.

Sylvain Charlebois, from Dalhousie University in Halifax, tells CTV News that, while the cost of food has risen an average of five per cent this year, some products are up much more than that.

The price of beef, for example is up by about 50 per cent.

He does expect the situation to stabilize by the spring, as producers adjust to demand and cope with issues like supply and transportation.
