This week’s tip is one that is near and dear to my heart: Donate & buy second hand clothing!

Welcome to Local Hippie’s weekly tip for living a greener life! Each week we will provide you with a quick tip to help you reduce your carbon footprint and change the world.

This week’s tip is one that is near and dear to my heart: Donate & buy second hand clothing!

Donating & buying second hand clothing is not only great for the environment, but also for your wallet and fashion sense.

> The environment: The average person throws away up to 70 pounds of clothing per year. By donating your used clothing, you can help reduce the amount of unnecessary waste being made. For example, Value Village alone saves more than 650 million pounds of clothing from landfills each year!
By buying used clothing, you can save the precious resources needed to produce and distribute new ones – for example, did you know that it can take up to 10,000 litres of water to make one new pair of jeans?!

> Your wallet: Second-hand stores give you the opportunity to pay a fraction of the cost of new items for essentially the same thing!

> Your fashion-sense: There is no place like a second-hand store to find something totally unique to spice up your closet.

So, next time you add something new to your wish list, head to your local thrift store and see if you can find it there first! Your planet, wallet, and closet will thank you for it.
