This week’s tip is short and sweet: shop local!
I know how tempting it can be during the holiday season to order EVERYTHING online, but choosing to shop local can have a big impact.

When we order things online we need to consider both their carbon footprint AND packaging they will inevitably arrive in. Items ordered online need to be transported via planes, trains, and automobiles that ALL create carbon emissions. On top of that, most items arrive wrapped in non-recyclable materials like plastic bubble wrap and plastic mailing envelopes.

Secondly, shopping local supports your community and the people in it. A quote I saw online sums this up wonderfully: “When you buy from a small business, you’re not helping a CEO buy a 3rd summer home. You’re helping a little boy get piano lessons, a little girl get her soccer jersey, and parents put food on the table”

A good tip for supporting local is to visit holiday shopping events in your community. There you will find a ton of small makers and business people from your area! Come see Local Hippie and other local entrepreneurs Thursday Dec 5th from 6-9 pm at the Espanola Recreational Complex!

Cheers to an earth-friendly holiday season!
