Wildfires in north-western Ontario

The organization representing some 49 First Nations in North-western Ontario is urging the provincial government to declare a state of emergency over wildfires threatening several communities in the region.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler says the situation in Northwestern Ontario is growing worse by the hour…and an emergency declaration is needed to mobilize more aircraft for evacuations.

Hundreds of people have already been evacuated from two First Nations now threatened by the flames.

Fiddler warns that could change very quickly.
