Elliot Lake passes municipal budget for 2021

Elliot Lake’s budget will show a 2.57 percent tax hike this year.

This means ratepayers will be assessed an approximate increase of $83 for a home assessed at $95,000 with council providing its reluctant approval earlier this week.

While some councillors felt the budget was bare-boned with few projects going ahead, others acknowledged these are unusual times with COVID-19 and there is enough of a burden on the community.

The hike will bring in an additional $365,000 to cover an increase in insurance premiums and other unforeseen expenditures.

It also means some major projects, such as the hubs will have to wait until the pandemic is over and economic conditions improve.
