Minister makes a surprise visit to Wiikwemkoong

By Rosalind Russell – A surprise visitor stopped in at Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory earlier this week.

Marc Miller, the federal Indigenous Relations minister, visited the community on Wednesday while he was in the area for other matters.

While in the community he met with council at the administration building and a short tour of the community.

Officials say priorities that were touched on included Islands Claim, Oil and Gas litigation, funding for the new Elders Home, the need for a Cultural Centre and more.

The minister voiced his support of the local challenges and initiatives with the promise to share the information and requests with his federal colleagues and fellow ministers.
