Northern Ontario MPs cross party lines to address Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission of Ontario

By Rosalind Russell-

Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes has the support of all her fellow Northern Ontario peers asking the Federal Electoral Boundaries of Ontario maintain her riding.

Hughes says the MPS are concerned with not only the potential loss of the riding, but also the lack of public hearings, none of which were held in Northern Ontario.

She adds the consultation process is taking place during municipal elections, which is also restricting municipalities from engaging in the process.

Hughes says all the MPs are not opposed to adjustments, but the current number of electoral districts in Northern Ontario must be maintained.

The commission has recommended the riding be eliminated due to a drop in population and be split between the Nickel Belt and Sault Ste. Marie ridings.
