By Grant Lewis – Ah yes, Stompin’ Tom would approve? Doesn’t get much better than getting 30 kids together on a Sunday afternoon playing hockey for fun. This is what Pond Hockey in Espanola is all about. About 10 years ago, kids from 4 to 14 years old were encouraged to come out and play hockey at the arena, with most equipment supplied. Parents must show up with their kids to help out wherever possible. Basic skills are taught but it is not a skating school. Those players registered in minor hockey are not eligible for this program. There are no formal teams, no roughing, and goalies are optional! Sessions are on Sundays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and run from October to March Break. The Espanola Lions club is proud to help out with ice time for these enthusiastic kids with hopes to join minor hockey, and to Paul Kallioinen and his team of dedicated volunteers and parents. Enjoy your wrap up banquet everyone!!!
