Spending a night in the rain to help the homeless

By Rosalind Russell – The weather was wet and cold Tuesday night, but that did stop students from an Espanola high school spending the night inside cardboard boxes and tents.

Stephen Montgomery, a teacher of Ecole La Renaissance says the students set up their homeless awareness event in the parking lot at Giant Tiger on Tuesday night.

He says the students took part in various activities to help recreate the difficulties the homeless deal with on a daily basis with the cold, wind and rain bringing a harsher sense of reality to the participants.

Montgomery says speakers from the food bank and local social services board also talked to the students about their programming and how they try to help those in need.

Montgomery says he does not have a final amount, but the event was also a fundraiser with all pledges and donations going to Espanola’s Food Bank – Helping Hand.

He adds this is the second year the students took on the challenge to help those in need in the local area.
