TRAFFIC COMPLAINT LEADS TO SEVERAL CHARGES

(ESPANOLA, ON) – On November 5, 2020, at approximately 4:40 p.m. members from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with the assistance of the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS), and the Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) investigated a traffic complaint of a vehicle that was witnessed causing a near head on collision, on Highway 6 in Espanola.

Police located the vehicle and conducted a roadside investigation. It was determined that the driver was under the influence of a drug. Police learned the driver was also suspended from driving and was in breach of a probation order.

Investigation revealed the driver to be in possession of brass knuckles, a replica hand gun, drug paraphernalia, a quantity of Canadian currency and a quantity of suspected methamphetamine in tablet form, codeine pills, cocaine, crack cocaine, crystal meth, cannabis and fentanyl. The suspected drugs were processed with the assistance of the Community Street Crime Unit and had an estimated street value of $12, 816.

The driver was arrested and brought back to the Espanola detachment for further testing by a GSPS Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE).

As a result of the investigation, Angele CAYER, of Sudbury was charged with:

  • Dangerous Operation, contrary to section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the CC,
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC,
  • Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition, contrary to section 92(2) of the CC,
  • Carrying Concealed Weapon, contrary to section 90 of the CC,
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance – Other Drugs, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA,
  • Possession of a Schedule 2 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking 0 Other Drugs, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA,
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 – in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC, (two counts),
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC,
  • Have Care of Control of Vehicle or Boat with Cannabis Readily Available contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act 2017 (CCA2017), and
  • Driving while Under Suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

 

The accused has been remanded into custody pending a bail hearing.

The accused was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
