Northern Mayors provide support to Bill 5

By Rosalind Russell – Northern growth and economic stability are top of mind for the five Northern Ontario Large Urban Mayors.

The group sat down with Premier Doug Ford, some cabinet ministers and leaders from Invest Ontario earlier this week.

They say the talks centred around protecting the region’s economy, responding to the impact of tariffs and creating conditions for long-term growth.

North Bay Mayor Peter Chirico (pronounced cheer-ih-co) says tapping into critical minerals is key.  He says they were direct in their questions for the premier when it comes to Bill 5.

The mayors say our region is entering a period of renewed growth, adding that with a strong partnership with the province, northern cities are well-positioned to drive economic development and improve quality of life.

The Canadian Press reports the province will amend Bill 5 to explicitly include duty to consult provisions throughout the legislation, and won’t designate the Ring of Fire a special economic zone until meaningful consultations are held with all First Nations in the area.
