NDP sponsoring amendments to bills to increase highway safety

By Rosalind Russell – The Ontario NDP has introduced amendments to two key bills focusing on transportation: the Highway Safety Act and the Public Transportation & Highway Improvement Act.

The amendments are to ensure that the scales and inspection sites along Highway 11 north of North Bay and along Highway 17 are staffed for a minimum of 12 hours.

The second push is for the government to ensure there is enough staffing of provincial police to ensure traffic enforcement along the main byways.

Commercial truck drivers must now be tested by an examiner certified by the Ministry of Transportation before being licensed.

The amendments come at a time when there has been three major accidents in the last two weeks on Highway 17, resulting in two fatalities and serious life-changing injuries.
