By Rosalind Russell – Premier Doug Ford is apologizing for comments condemned by First Nation leaders as offensive and racist.
Ford met with representatives of the Anishinabek Nation yesterday to address their concerns over Bill 5.
The first “special economic zone” he promised to declare is the so-called “Ring of Fire” in Northern Ontario — which is rich in minerals.
Ford says he can get pretty passionate adding he wants to sincerely apologize.
Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Linda Debassige says she and the other chiefs in the meeting accept the apology as sincere – however they remain opposed to Bill 5.
She says the premier confirmed he’ll continue to have an ongoing dialogue with rights holders in a respectful way.
