By Rosalind Russell – Nairn & Hyman CAO and Clerk Belinda Ketchabaw says plans to haul radioactive waste on Highway 17 from Nipissing First Nation to the townships of Baldwin, and Nairn & Hyman have been cancelled.
Ketchabaw says the niobium will be sent to a facility near Sarnia, where some of the waste was already being transferred.
The original plan was for the radioactive material to be transported to the abandoned Lake Agnew Tailings Site, but Ketchabaw says the move sparked public meetings with citizens expressing opposition.
She says there was also concern the site was already leaching toxic minerals into the lake, the source of drinking water for the townships, and the government has stated it will do remedial work on the site.
