By Rosalind Russell – A historically geared institute is being established to protect and enhance Metis history.
Métis citizens, the leadership of the Métis Nation of Ontario, and dignitaries gathered this past weekend in Sault Ste. Marie for the MNO’s 32nd Annual General Assembly where they passed legislation for a new research institute.
President Margaret Froh says the passage of the Powley Institute Act is historical in establishing the Powley Institute as a Métis research institute in Ontario, which will serve as a hub for Métis-led research, education, and cultural preservation as well as a space of collaboration, growth, and learning for Métis.
She adds the institute is housed in the former Central United Church at 160 Spring Street in the Sault.
Froh says the institute is named in honour of Steve and Roddy Powley, Métis residents of the Sault who, after being fined for hunting moose without a license, fought in the courts for recognition of Métis rights, ultimately leading to the Supreme Court’s landmark R. v. Powley decision in 2003.
