College support workers on strike

By Rosalind Russell – As post-secondary students begin their new college semester, support workers from all of Ontario’s 24 colleges will be on the picket lines today.
On August 21st, the bargaining team representing over 10,000 full-time college support workers, including librarians, bookstore and registrar employees, requested a no board report, a measure that put the workers in a legal strike position today, September 11.
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) and the College Employer Council (CEC) have been negotiating the contracts, which are set to expire on September 1st since June.
Local union rep Yvan Roy says late night negotiations failed and so the workers will be on the picket lines today at Cambrian College’s main campus in Sudbury, as well as its satellite campuses in Espanola and Little Current.
