By Rosalind Russell – Ottawa is getting an overall D grade from Food Banks Canada for its poverty reduction efforts.  Its latest Poverty Report Card gives failing grades for unemployment and food insecurity – with a C for legislative process.

The network of over 5,500 food banks and community organizations says over 25% of households are struggling to afford food.

Officials say while governments have yet to take action to meet the scale of the crisis, newly introduced programs – including poverty-reduction strategies, affordable housing pilots and new dental care and school food programs – are showing early promise.

Among other things, they recommend governments commit to reducing food insecurity by 50% by 2030.
