Expansion of health care access being considered by Ontario government

By Rosalind Russell – The province is looking into expanding the scope of practice for a wide range of regulated health professionals, including optometrists, psychologists, and physiotherapists.

The health ministry says it would improve access to timely care, reduce pressure on the health-care system and allow more providers to work to the full extent of their training and expertise.

Some of the proposed changes could include optometrists performing minor surgical procedures, using laser therapy and more.

Several regulated health professionals could also be given the authority to order and perform certain diagnostic imaging procedures, such as x-rays, MRIs and CTs.

If approved, another change would see pharmacists assessing and giving prescriptions for an additional 14 ailments and administer more publicly funded vaccines.
