By Rosalind Russell – On the heels of job cuts at the hospital in North Bay, the Ontario Nurses’ Association is warning thousands of nurses could lose their jobs across the province in the next couple of years.
The ONA says a new report from Ontario’s Financial Accountability Office says if the province fails to improve health-care funding, well over 72-hundred nurses could be cut by 2027-28.
ONA President Erin Ariss (pronounced air-iss) says 13 of the layoffs announced last week in North Bay involve registered nurses.
She says Ontario is already desperately short of nursing care across all sectors, and with this new projection, they can see health care getting worse for their patients, residents and clients.
Along with an increase in parking rates and other measures, the North Bay Regional Health Centre announced 40 job layoffs last week.
However, officials say the number of affected employees could be reduced by new positions, offers of early exit, retirements, and more.
