By Rosalind Russell – The province will soon be tightening bail requirements.
Officials say new legislation will be introduced that will require an accused person, or their surety, to provide a cash security deposit in the full amount ordered by the court.
Currently, if the court orders a release on a promise to pay, no cash deposit is required.
The money would only be paid if the accused wouldn’t follow their terms of release.
The Ford Government says under the proposed new system, a cash security deposit in the full amount would be required once the person is released from custody.
If the terms are followed, the deposit would be returned.
Officials say the initiative would improve bail compliance and keep violent and repeat offenders behind bars.
