Mobile Crisis Response Team established in Blind River

By Rosalind Russell – East Algoma OPP, together with the Huron Shores Family Health Team and the Town of Blind River, is launching a Mobile Crisis Response Team serving communities across East Algoma.

Inspector Tyler Sturgeon says the collaborative program pairs a mental health professional with police officers to provide compassionate support during calls involving persons in crisis.

He explains responding at the time of need, the team offers on-site de-escalation, assessment, and referrals to community resources, helping reduce unnecessary emergency room visits, easing pressure on health care systems, and improving outcomes for those in distress.

Sturgeon says it is designed to assist with a wide range of police calls for service, not just those related to mental health pointing out a crisis can stem from many factors, and the team is ready to respond whenever someone is in need.

He adds the team also provides follow up services to ensure smooth transitions to longer term supports, reduce stigma, and enhance community safety.

Sturgeon says the partnership will deliver team services to communities along the north shore of Lake Huron, from the Town of Spanish to the Township of Tarbutt, complementing existing services in the City of Elliot Lake.
