Counterfeit bills rampant this time of year

By Rosalind Russell – The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service recently received a report from a local business on Manitoulin Island about a counterfeit bill.

According to the release, officers were given a counterfeit $50 Canadian bank note that was discovered by a local bank after the night deposit had been sent to the bank by a business in M’Chigeeng First Nation.

Police say people may try to pass counterfeit bills at any time, but it’s especially rampant this time of year when everyone is so busy and attention is focused more on holiday shopping.

The service says they don’t know how many bills might be in circulation, but they want to let communities know they’re out there.

Tips on what to do if you think you have a counterfeit note is available on their website.

If you think you might have a counterfeit note:

• Put the note in a marked envelope.

• Write down the time, date, location, and description of the person who gave you the note.

• If the bill is verified as counterfeit, a report will be filed with the appropriate authorities.
