Elliot Lake receiving $500,000 for pool repairs – reopening depends on contractors

By Rosalind Russell – The city of Elliot Lake is getting half a million dollars for pool repairs.

Kari Kluke, the Director of Recreation and Culture for the City of Elliot Lake says one of the city’s insurance policies will  cover the loss of equipment and damage caused by corrosion resulting from the acid leak, which occurred on July 2nd of last year.

She says the policy provides coverage of up to $500,000, subject to a $25,000 deductible adding at this time, staff are still awaiting final pricing from contractors for the complete scope of work.

Kluke adds with respect to required inspections, the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) has not yet provided an inspection date due to staffing shortages, and that will delay the reopening.

Although she did not have the insurance company’s report available, she says it looks like they determined the cause of the leak was flaws in the initial design of the system.

She did not give a timeline due to finalizing equipment replacement and contractors but is cautiously optimistic the facility will reopen early in the New Year.
