Work begins on restoring Lancer Dome in Sudbury

By Rosalind Russell – Work on restoring the Lancer Dome, the athletic community facility in Greater Sudbury, adjacent to Lasalle High School, has begun.

Superintendent of Business Adam Guilbault Rainbow District School Board received approval to proceed with the restoration plan from its insurance adjuster late last week.

He says the dome was partially inflated last Thursday to continue the process of removing the snow and ice from the membrane.

He adds there is more snow and ice to remove and work will continue with representatives of the manufacturing company are on site to provide guidance.

Guilbault says the facility continues to be assessed to determine next steps to bring the structure back into operation, and those assessments indicate it will take at least two weeks and possibly longer before the facility is restored.

He adds community use of the dome was suspended since the structure deflated following the unprecedented snowfall in mid-March.

The Lancer Dome is the first multi-use sports facility of its kind in Greater Sudbury.

Located at Lasalle Secondary School, 1545 Kennedy Street, the dome gives the community access to covered artificial turf in all seasons.

The dome has three smaller soccer fields convertible to one large FIFA regulation soccer field.

During school days and after school, it is used for athletic and academic programs in Rainbow Schools, as we promote healthy, active living for student achievement and well-being.

The dome is used by community groups during evenings, weekends and school holidays (except for statutory holidays.)

In addition to soccer, the dome provides an ideal space for cricket, flag football, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, slo-pitch and dryland training.
