Nairn & Hyman Township responds to impending closure of Nairn Centre Sawmill

By Rosalind Russell – The Township of Nairn and Hyman mayor and council are saddened by the announcement that Interfor will be indefinitely curtailing operations at the Nairn Centre mill.

Mayor Amy Mazey says the municipality recognizes how difficult the news is for employees, their families, and the many local businesses and residents, since the mill has been a cornerstone of Nairn and Hyman for decades.

She says their immediate focus is on supporting those affected and the township will work with federal and provincial partners and agencies to help them access available supports during this transition.

She also notes the LaCloche Region Economic Diversification Plan has been completed, giving council options to move the community forward.

Interfor announced the shutdown of the sawmill and planer earlier this week, citing sustained softwood lumber duties and tariffs and continued cost pressures.
