Paper Kings’ Smith named finalist for CJHL’s Top Rookie Award

By Rosalind Russell – A forward with the Espanola Paper Kings has been named one of the five finalists for the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Top Rookie Award.

Sixteen-year-old Owen Smith from North Bay, who was already named the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Rookie of the Year led all first-year skaters in scoring with 60 points, including 24 tallies, in 51 games.

He also tied for second place in rookie power play goals, seven in all, first in assists and first in game-winning goals by a rookie.

Smith capped off his season by being selected to the league’s first All-Rookie Team.

The winner will be announced soon.
