By Rosalind Russell – Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Bill Rosenberg was in Espanola yesterday to meet with several municipal leaders for funding announcements.
Among the stops was at Boogie Mountain to announce nearly $200,000 from the NOHFC and $65,000 from LAMBAC for its diversification project.
Tom Hutchinson, who oversees the facility, says the funds will include a 3D archery course and target range, a disk golf course with regulation nets, cross-country skiing, a sliding hill, and more mountain bike trails.
Rosenberg also announced a grant of just over $198,000 from the Ontario Trillium Fund for a new ice plant installation at the Espanola Curling Club.
President Alan Emiry says the installation will begin shortly and be ready by late July.
Louise Laplante the CEO of Community Living Espanola also acknowledged receipt of over $32,000 for improvements to one of their local homes that needed structural repairs in the basement.
Rosenberg also presented certificates marking the completion of three projects within the town including a gender equality retrofit project at the complex, an ongoing history project at the library and sanitizing equipment for local firefighters.
Another investment included over $94,000 to assist the Rainbow Country Recreation and Development Association upgrade Whitefish Falls Community Centre.
Officials say the centre operates as a social gathering space and an emergency shelter under the mandate of the Rainbow Country Recreation and Development Association.
Association secretary-treasurer Heather Nicholson says the funding will be used for exterior and interior renovations to the centre, including roofing upgrades, new flooring, insulation improvements and replacement of the furnace, among other improvements.
She adds the funds will assist in turning the centre into a municipal hub for recreation and community gatherings, as well as function as a rental facility.
