By Grant Lewis – Espanola Gardeners will be having a sunflower growing contest…not yet….but early in September. But, you have to plan now in order to enter in the fall. There will be three categories and two age groups. Awards will be given for the tallest sunflower; sunflower with the largest seed head; sunflower with the most blooms. Age categories are 13 years old and under, and everyone else.
A few tips for success…
Plant directly into the soil. Sunflowers do NOT like to be moved and have their roots disturbed. Plant seeds at least 2 feet apart and one to two inches deep.
Buy the correct type of seed. You can purchase single stem giants, bush plants for numerous blooms, and seeds for a specific colour.
These plants are called sunflowers for a good reason. They need 8 to 10 hours of direct sun everyday.
These giants absolutely need help standing up. If they do not feel secure this will stunt their growth. So a sturdy tall support is what they need. A sturdy stake will also help them survive serious winds.
Steady watering is essential….not too much and certainly not saturated. Compost is a must for nourishment plus a balanced liquid fertilizer will help, but everything in moderation. Too fertilizer might produce huge lovely foliage at the expense of a large flower.
When watering, water the bottom of the plant directly. Moisture of the leaves will promote powdery mildew and other problems.
Have fun and stay tuned as to judging dates in the fall.
