By Rosalind Russell – Wildfire season has begun with several fires within the Sudbury District including one just north of Nairn & Hyman Township.
Fire services are responding to wildland fire Sudbury 2, which currently measures over 72 hectares.
The fire is located approximately four kilometres north of Highway 17, and three kilometres southeast of Agnew Lake, north of Nairn Centre.
The fire is not under control.
Residents in the area and travelers along Highway 17 may notice smoke.
Two CL-415 Waterbombers and a Bird Dog are conducting air attack operations, and Ontario Fire Rangers and local municipal firefighters are also on site.
Please stay clear of the area.
Fire services are currently monitoring six wildfires that have been reported across northeastern Ontario, primarily in the Sudbury and North Bay regions.
With widespread power outages also affecting parts of the area this evening, it’s possible that some of these fires may have been sparked by downed power lines, although the causes have not yet been confirmed.
