Two unconnected residential fires destroy homes on Manitoulin Island

By Rosalind Russell – There were two unconnected residential fires that destroyed homes on Manitoulin Island over the last week.

Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands Fire Chief Duane Deschamps says a fire on Draper Street in Little Current tore through the home on June 2, but the family of three escaped the blaze and there were no injuries.

A visiting family also escaped without injury.

He says they have found where the fire started, but have yet to determine the cause, adding the fire is deemed not suspicious.

Another fire last Friday destroyed a home on Pleasant View Drive in Mindemoya.

Central Manitoulin Fire Chief Paul Grosse says that fire is also not deemed to be suspicious, adding the cause may be electrical in nature, but the investigation continues.

Both families are receiving supports in their respective communities.
