MPP France Gélinas celebrating Lively’s 75th Anniversary

By Rosalind Russell – Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas will join residents in celebrating Lively’s 75th anniversary.

Gelinas will attend the opening ceremony tomorrow (Friday, July 10) and participate in the anniversary parade on Saturday.

She says the celebrations will bring together residents, community leaders, and visitors to commemorate the decades of community pride, history, and achievement in Lively.

The town was planned and built by Inco 75 years ago to house workers of Creighton Mine.

Inco bought 1,100 acres to build the townsite located close to some of the oldest settlements in the area, Whitefish, where a trading post was established in 1829 and about seven kilometres from Naughton, established in 1887.

Lively was incorporated as a town January 1, 1953, and became part of Walden in 1973 when the Regional Municipality of Sudbury was established.

In the 1970s, Inco sold its company homes, so Walden (Ward 2) became part of the City of Greater Sudbury in 2001.

The Opening Ceremonies will be held at 5 p.m. at the Walden arena tomorrow while the parade will start out Saturday morning at the Lively Secondary School at 10 a.m.
