Data Centre Playbook focuses on energy and related costs

By Rosalind Russell – The province is looking for public input on its newly announced Data Centre Playbook.

According to the release, the Ontario Government says the playbook will be a key enabler of its forthcoming artificial intelligence strategy to leverage the economic opportunities AI adoption will bring.

The government claims it will generate $122 billion in economic growth by 2035 and create more than 17,000 jobs every year.

Premier Doug Ford says it will also ensure new data centres play by the right rules and pay the full cost of electricity, so no energy costs are passed on to Ontarian families.

Officials add that only projects that accelerate economic growth and have significant community investment will be considered, and that only non-financial support will be used to attract data centre investment.

The 30-day public comment period through the Environmental and Regulatory Registries of Ontario opened last week. (Aug. 13)
