By Rosalind Russell – 120 years and counting for the Massey Agricultural Fair that gets underway today.
In the fall of 1907, a few “community-minded individuals felt the need to encourage good farming principles by displaying their crops and goods in a friendly, neighborhood competition,” thus forming the Massey Agricultural Society.
The fair was a family affair: men took care of livestock, horse draws, and lumberjacking competitions; women displayed handicrafts, sewing, and domestic arts like quilting; and children also participated by submitting arts and crafts projects.
It still has all that but has grown to include headline entertainment; this year it is The Hip, Luke Combs and Crystal Shawanda, the midway, demolition derby, motocross, and so much more.
