La Renaissance SHSM Environment students take part in an immersive outdoor learning experience

From September 16 to 18, students enrolled in the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Environment at École secondaire catholique La Renaissance in Espanola enjoyed a memorable educational experience at Chutes Provincial Park. The three-day camping excursion provided students with valuable hands-on learning opportunities while strengthening their independence, teamwork skills, and appreciation for the environment.

Under the supervision of teachers Josée Lapointe and Stephen Montgomery, students took on a variety of responsibilities essential to outdoor living, including setting up campsites and cooking areas, preparing group meals, maintaining campfires, and cleaning the site before departure.

During their stay, students also explored several park trails, including the popular Twin Bridges Trail, learned about the history of Chutes Provincial Park, and participated in engaging discussions with Tamara Flannigan, Park Superintendent.

The experience enabled students to earn three industry-recognized certifications in the environmental sector: Wilderness Survival, Knot-Tying Techniques, and Plant Identification. As part of their ongoing efforts to achieve a Platinum Certification from EcoSchools Canada, students also began planning environmental initiatives that will be implemented at the school throughout the 2026-2027 school year.

“The camping trip was a lot of fun. We had a great balance of SHSM Environment activities and certification opportunities, while still having time to enjoy being together outdoors and connect with nature,” shared Mathis Marleau, grade 12 student at École secondaire catholique La Renaissance.

“By immersing students in the natural environment, we provide them with meaningful opportunities to develop practical skills and gain a deeper understanding of the environmental issues that affect the world around them. It is incredibly rewarding to see their enthusiasm, resourcefulness, and commitment throughout experiences like this,” said teacher Josée Lapointe.

This excursion reflects the ongoing commitment of Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon schools to providing authentic learning experiences that help students explore diverse areas of interest while developing leadership skills and environmental stewardship.
