Devastating fire takes lives at Canadian Forces Base

By Rosalind Russell – Four members of the Canadian Armed Forces died, and dozens of others were injured in what Prime Minister Mark Carney says was a “violent, fast moving fire’ at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta on Saturday.

Major-General Wade Rutland of the Canadian Armed Forces says the grass fire broke out while multiple training activities were happening at the base.

He says that the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, which is being conducted collaboratively between RCMP and Canadian Armed Forces investigators.

However, he says that right now the top priority is the care of soldiers and supporting affected families.

As of yesterday, there were 39 people in hospital, 19 of whom are in critical condition.
