By Rosalind Russell – The public is invited to come downtown to the municipal hall in Espanola Friday morning, at 11:00 a.m. to take part in the raising of the Poppy Flag.
Members of the Royal Canadian Legion – Branch #39 and municipal staff invite the public to attend the ceremony, which is the official launch for the annual poppy campaign. Officials say funds go to veterans and other programs supported by the organization.
The red poppy is a symbol of Remembrance Day that was inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields,” written by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae.
Canada officially adopted the bright red flower as a symbol of remembrance in 1921.
Members and supporters of the Legion will be out at local businesses over the next couple of weeks receiving donations for the poppies, which are to be worn on the left side of the chest.
