Algoma Public Health announces its Public Health Champions for 2023 

By Rosalind Russell – The health unit states the awards are given to an individual or organization that has helped to protect and promote community health and advance health equity in Algoma. 

The 2023 Public Health Champion Awards were presented to: Shawna Mornix, the Sault Community Career Centre, and New Northern Mentality. 

Mornix is mental health support specialist whose personal struggles have inspired her in the startup of Kickstart Mental Health assisting both individuals and communities. 

Sault Community Career Centre extends its support to various critical areas, including housing, healthcare, education, and more with a focus on newcomers to the city. 

And the New Northern Mentality Youth Group is a youth-led advocacy in Sault Ste. Marie and a proponent of the new Youth Wellness Hub. 

The champions accepted their awards at Algoma Public Health’s Board of Health meeting on Wednesday.
