
By Rosalind Russell – Canada Post workers are on strike after the federal government ordered the corporation yesterday to begin a sweeping overhaul that could spell the end of traditional door-to-door delivery.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says the nation-wide walkout is a direct response to Ottawa’s move, which it called an attack on workers and postal service.
In the face of mounting losses — expected to be $1.5 billion this year — the feds announced measures to cut costs and modernize operations.
That includes lifting the moratorium on community mailbox conversions, ending a 1994 freeze on rural post office closures, altering delivery standards, and speeding up the process for stamp rate increases.
Mail delivery is expected to be disrupted across the country as picket lines go up.
