Over 200 attend Remembrance Day Ceremony in Espanola – Talevi, Arnold and Byers remembered

By Rosalind Russell – Over 200 people, a record-breaking number of citizens, gathered at the Espanola Royal Canadian Legion Branch #39 yesterday to attend the Remembrance Day Ceremony.

The ceremony took a different approach this year with new President, Bill Noon, having the Girl Guides of Nairn Centre read in Flander’s Fields, and local musical talents providing the pipes, the Last Post, and Amazing Grace following the parade to the cenotaph.

Noon also paid respects to the memory of Espanola’s last veteran of World War Two, Orio Talevi, who passed away in May at 102 years of age.

The first wreath was laid by Silver Cross mother, Leona Arnold of Baldwin Township.

Her son, Glen Arnold, was one of four soldiers killed by a suicide bomber on September 18th, 2006, while on active duty in Afghanistan.

Private Dave Byers of Espanola also died in the same attack, and his father, John, laid a wreath in remembrance of his son.

Wreaths were also laid by local politicians followed by words of remembrance.
