Possible resolution on Dean Lake Bridge this week

By Rosalind Russell – A citizens group in the Township of Huron Shores focusing on the Dean Lake Bridge is hoping to see a resolution this week.

Mary Johnson of the Community Voices Committee says council is expected to decide whether to retrofit or replace the bridge, which is a major crossing for residents and motorists in the township.

She says the members expect council will either vote to pursue bridge rehabilitation, abandon it in favour of an alternate road route or could defer a final decision until other matters are resolved.

She says the committee is “desperately” hoping council finally recognizes the necessity of restoring access to the bridge.

The bridge was closed back in January, after the municipality received advice indicating it represented a danger to users due to age and deterioration.

It was reopened with weight restrictions but flooding in early Spring created two sinkholes and road upheaval, so the bridge was closed again.

Council is also waiting word from upper government as to jurisdiction, which could also affect their final decision.

The meeting is this Wednesday, 7pm, in council chambers.
