By Rosalind Russell – The Anishinabek Nation has declared a renewed State of Emergency over public safety.
Officials say the nation’s Chiefs-in-Assembly have formally renewed the state of emergency declaration at this year’s Fall Assembly.
It was reinstated due to widespread drug trafficking and crime activity, rising violence and threats targeting community members, chronic underfunding of First Nations policing services as well as a growing mental health and addictions emergency on its member First Nations.
Grand Council Chief Linda Debassige says they are not second-class citizens, and they deserve the same level of safety and security as every other person in Canada.
The Anishinabek Nation is calling on the federal and provincial governments to immediately begin negotiations with First Nation police services administration to ensure adequate funding models, beginning the process of recognition of First Nation policing as an Essential Service and more.
