By Rosalind Russell – A local film/music producer has assisted a First Nation songstress in professionally producing a trilingual version of our national anthem.
Jayson Stewart, who is also a teacher at Espanola High School, has assisted Whitefish River First Nation member and singer, Mary Bryton Nahwegahbow, on the recorded trilingual version of O Canada, sung in Anishinaabemowin, English and French.
She says she auditioned for the Little Native Hockey League back in 2017 and changed up the lyrics at that time to compete, progressing from there to sing her version at the 2017 North American Indigenous Games, and for national leagues including the Blue Jays and the Senators, conferences and other gatherings.
She also sang it at the Canadian governments’ cabinet swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa this year, which garnered her national attention.
Stewart says the first verse is English, second French and the third in Anishinaabemowin.
He says copies of it will be made available to all schools and any other organizations that reaches out for a copy.
