By Rosalind Russell – Several homeowners in the Township of North Shore, most of them seniors, are upset with Canada Post and a change to their delivery, which means driving rather than local pickup.
One resident from the Pronto subdivision at the edge of Algoma Mills, told The Moose she and her neighbours who live on both sides of Highway 17, all received letters from Canada Post last week giving them seven days notice (letter dated Jan. 5) that they will no longer be able to pick up their mail locally.
Rather, starting today they will have to pick it up in Spragge, and packages in the Town of Spanish. ‘
This means driving, 14 kilometres to pick up the mail, and nearly 38 kilometres to Spanish.
Another resident says he is also upset, since most of them are seniors and having to drive in winter to pick up mail is not considered an improvement in postal service.
In addition, the postal code has been changed from P0R 1AO to P0R 1K0.
Both say no previous notice was given.
Canada Post made changes to its delivery systems following the settlement of agreements with its unions in late December stating they had to find efficiencies in service, which would include changes to delivery locations.
The Moose has contacted Canada Post but as of press time, has not received a response.
