By Rosalind Russell – He always planned to be a doctor, even in his home country of Nigeria, and is thrilled to be setting up a practice on Manitoulin Island.
Dr. Akintayo Akindele, who prefers Dr. Akin, is a family physician who has moved his family to Manitoulin Island to work with the Manitoulin Health Centre.
He told The Moose he knew at 16, he wanted to be a doctor and likes to be called a “rural generalist,” which means he handles whatever situation that may arise including emergency cases, routine care, trauma, births and more.
Wanting to offer more opportunities to his children, he came to Canada in 2018, through the Federal Skills programming, gaining his medical training in Mississauga and Brampton.
Dr. Akin says last year, he completed the Touchstone Institute’s 12-week clinical field assessment gaining more experience in emergency and long-term care.
As part of his agreement with Practice Ready Ontario, he moved to the Island last Spring for a three-year stint, but emphasizes he plans to make Little Current his long-time home.
He says he has one child in high school, and two in elementary, adding the children have fallen in love with the North as well and thanks everyone for making him feel so welcome.
